Shahbano Abbas is a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. She is studying for a MSc in Data Analytics and Social Policy. She did her undergraduate degree in History and Politics at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Shahbano has lived in 8 countries and as a result is interested in exploring comparative data-driven policy design. She is eager to understand how to use big and unconventional data in tandem with traditional sources to inform policy. Shahbano Abbas began her career working in the private sector with a focus on analytics, but quickly transitioned to the public sector. Before coming to graduate school, she worked with Knowledge Platform, an education technology firm, and using her technical skills for research, helped produced a seminal policy evaluation on Higher Education in Pakistan, with the Pakistani government. Shahbano Abbas is currently involved on campus at Penn with the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program where she has a dual role of Research Assistant as well as Project lead for the Artificial Intelligence Team. She is also on the executive committee of the Penn Data Science for Social Good society and is Finance Chair for the student government in the School of Social Policy and Practice at Penn.
