Mary Kate O'Connell is a Senior at Villanova University where she studies Political Science and Economics. Her main areas of focus are international studies and geopolitical economics. Having studied abroad in Fall 2018 at the University of Ghana Legon, Mary Kate began diving deeper into international development and researched the effects Ghanaian fiscal policy has had on small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). Further, her internship at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (Ghana-CDD) gave her the opportunity to research the effectiveness of electoral management bodies (EMBs) and their role in creating and sustaining free and fair elections. Upon returning back to the U.S., during the summer of 2019 Mary Kate interned at the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA), a trade association responsible for 85% of all U.S. private investment in Africa. She traveled with the team at CCA to Mozambique during CCA's annual U.S.-Africa Business Summit. Back on campus, Mary Kate is Co-Chair for Student Facilitation with the Department of Service Learning. She has been serving the Philadelphia area since her sophomore year and is a student facilitator for freshmen and sophomores in the program. Mary Kate is an active traveler and loves new adventures.
